Washington, D.C. – Unlocking America’s Future is launching a new campaign in Pennsylvania to hold State Representative Milou Mackenzie (PA-131) accountable for co-sponsoring HB334, an anti-ESG bill that would restrict responsible investing in the state. The campaign includes a six-figure digital buy and new research that exposes how Rep. Mackenzie, and other supporters of the bill, have sided with out-of-state billionaires and right-wing extremist groups instead of the constituents they claim to represent.
The new report reveals how the legislation would restrict financial service providers from using responsible investing criteria and could compel financial institutions to provide services to extremist groups, including those that promote discrimination. The research also reveals the Big Oil interests behind the bill:
- HB334 was based on model legislation created by the climate-science denying Heartland Institute, which has taken money from the oil industry and billionaires like the Mercer and Uihlein families.
- Cosponsors of the bill include at least eight members of Pennsylvania’s State House Freedom Caucus, which is part of the extreme State Freedom Caucus Network that has taken at least $100,000 in funding from rightwing judicial activist Leonard Leo’s anti-ESG advocacy machine.
- Following the introduction of the bill, Mackenzie received an endorsement from the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity during her 2024 re-election campaign.
“State Rep. Mackenzie and her extreme colleagues in the Pennsylvania legislature are pushing a harmful anti-ESG agenda,” said Kyle Herrig, spokesperson for Unlocking America’s Future. “Instead of protecting the economic security of their constituents, they are allowing out-of-state billionaires in the oil and gas industry to influence them and attempt to distort the free market in the name of financing polluters and hate groups.”
